Tools

Welder

The welder was probably the most used tool during the construction of our car. The main welders on our team were Connor and Adam. We had to assure proper welds so we could have a safe and long lasting car.

Band Saw

We used the bandsaws to cut out the wooden jigs and the PVC pipes.

Pipe Bender

The pipe bender was heavily used as we needed to bend many different pieces.

Pipe Notcher

We used the pipe notcher to make the end of the pipe match up better with other pipes. We used this tool alot with the beginning construction phase.

Cold Cut Saws

The cold cut saw is the saw we used to cut all our metal. We had two available.

Angle Grinder

We used the angle grinder to clean off our fundraising pieces. We also used the angle grinder to clean our front spindles.

Hand Drill

We used the hand drill a lot to secure our jigs to the cart. We also used the drills to make the side supports for the shell.

Compressed Air Tools

We used the compressed air tool to cut the shell down to size. We used the compressed air tool in order to get two cutters going at one time.

Lathe

The lathe was used when we needed to custom make bolts, for example we machined a grade 8 bolt down to a size that would fit the bearings.

Materials

Wood

We used wood for a few critical tasks. We used wooden jigs to hold the frame together until we could tack the pieces together. The wooden jigs were made from scrap pieces. We also used wood to make the supports for the car to hold it in a stable position.

PVC

The PVC was used to make the side supports. We would then make the actual piece. This was used in order to make the correct piece the first time.

Round Stock

We used round stock for everything up from the base frame. It was easier to work with for bending, welding, and painting.

1" Stock Square Tubing

We used the square tubing on the base frame. We used it here because the square gave us more area to place objects like the floor, the side supports and the motor mount.

Suspension Kit

We ordered a $200 suspension kit, which saved us a lot of time and money. The kit came with four A arms, two shocks, a mounting piece, and a rack and pinion steering set.

Perferated Metal

We used expanded metal on the floor and seat because it does not add much weight, and allows for ventilation. We learned that ventilation is important from other teams, as their canopies would fog up without ventilation.

Paint

We used black matte spray paint to paint the frame. We chose the matte black because it is our school color, our other team is using the same color so we would look more like a team. The matte black looked the best on one of our fundraising pieces.

Marker Board

We used the marker board to cover the top of our cart. The marker board allowed us to mark out the shell and to write ideas down on the cart in the heat of the moment.
